Goal: Through the development of the Mentor Nature Preserve Shoreline Master Plan, ensure that the surf spot known as The Goons is not impacted and that the shoreline is not armored.
The City of Mentor is currently working on a Master Plan related to the nearly 1.5 miles of shoreline along Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. The existing shoreline is currently eroding at a rate of 4′ to 8′ per year. There is a surf break offshore of the study area known as The Goons that produces high quality waves for Northeastern Ohio surfers. This shoreline is uniquely undeveloped and is a prime candidate for employing a managed retreat strategy and maintains the natural sediment supply to the littoral system.
