Ensure Accurate Recyclability Labeling in Maine!

Help the state of Maine pass a bill requiring producers to accurately label recyclability of plastic products and packages.

March 26, 2024: Victory!

The Maine Chapter is celebrating a victory for the passage of L.D. 295, "An Act to Incentive Accurate Recyclability Labeling on Packaging Material."

This bill aims to reduce consumer confusion of whether products or packaging is recyclable by incentivizing accuracy in recyclability claims.

Our chapter supported this bill by testifying at a public hearing on 1/24/2024 and sharing information about their personal experiences with plastic pollution. Additionally, the chapter was able to provide valuable information utilized in the bill's work session.

Maine has been a leader in tackling plastic pollution, yet gaps remain, specifically in terms of ensuring that plastic packaging is recycled to the highest and most efficient level possible.

The passing of L.D. 295 will help streamline the recycling stream and reduce contamination, ultimately increasing the state's recycling rate and helping to meet the goals of the EPR program.

The Maine chapter is optimistic with the passage of this bill, and will continue to support plastic pollution policies that will enable Maine to be a leader in the plastic realm.
